Few of 1992s pop culture features stood the test of time, a fact that you can be forgiven for celebrating. Sir Mix-a-Lot shared his thoughts on the female form in "Baby Got Back", flannel was everywhere, and Michael Keaton was Batman. It wasn't all bad news, though: 1992 saw the beginning of Ab Fab, and a charming little film called "Aladdin" earned worldwide box office success. Decades later, the Disney musical is delighting a new audience of fans on stage.

Seeing the Magic

"Aladdin The Musical" plans to see the world; no word on whether any magic carpet rides are involved. Thanks to worldwide demand for the show, productions are simultaneously staged at London's Prince Edward Theatre, on Broadway at New York's New Amsterdam Theatre and at the Stage Theatre Neue Flora in Hamburg, Germany. "Aladdin the Musical" currently delights crowds at the Dentsu Shiki Theatre Umi in Tokyo, and audiences Down Under are in on the fun too: A production currently staged in Sydney plans to make a move to Melbourne.

The Aladdin Experience

At two and a half hours long, "Aladdin the Musical" packs in a full hour more story and song than the original film. It's a stage show, so you'll relax in your comfortable seat as actors clad in bright harem trousers and colourful jewelled robes dance and sing their way through the story. The mammoth cave and decadent castle sets are particularly dazzling, but there's one prop that stands out. When the show first opened in Seattle in 2011, the famous magic carpet was literally made of a mattress on a stick. Sharing more about the mechanics of the current carpet would shatter some of its magic, so suffice it to say that its appearance tends to bring audible gasps from the crowd. The show is totally engaging for adult audiences, and it's appropriate for most kids over the age of 6. They can stretch their legs during the show's one intermission.

Changes From the Film

Even if you've seen the film dozens of times, don't fear that "Aladdin the Musical" will simply rehash its events. The stage show takes the best features of the film and makes some changes that add new life to this classic story. Just like in the film, all the musical's songs are written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. In addition to classics such as "Friend Like Me", audiences at the stage show get to hear seven new songs, three of which were originally written for the film. And while some surprises are best left unspoiled, you can expect to see a larger presence from the hilarious Genie and the princess Jasmine. Three of the musical's new songs feature her, including the emotional "These Palace Walls". One change might be a sad one for animal lovers: Aladdin's monkey Abu and Jasmine's tiger Rajah are gone.
